Kingdom Foundations: Healing

In Devotions Daily

From The Kingdom Life Bible

We see the consistent, unchanging will and provision of God for healing through the covenants, both old and new.

Exodus 23:25–26

In the Old Testament, God identified His will within His name (as in Jehovah Rapha, “the Lord who heals you”; Exodus 15:26). Healing was provided in the old covenant through the priesthood (see Leviticus 14–15), and we see many instances of miraculous healings: the physical restoration of Job, the delivering power of the bronze serpent in the wilderness (see Numbers 21:4–9), and Naaman’s cleansing from leprosy (see 2 Kings 5:1–15), for example. The psalmists declared,

O Lord my God, I cried out to You, and You healed me. — Psalm 30:2

and

Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all His benefits: who forgives all your iniquities, who heals all your diseases. — Psalm 103:2–3

Proverbs reveals God’s wisdom and instruction regarding health and healing:

Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord and depart from evil. It will be health to your flesh, and strength to your bones. — Proverbs 3:7–8

And the last book of the Old Testament points prophetically to the healing power of the coming Messiah:

The Sun of Righteousness shall arise with healing in His wings. — Malachi 4:2

The unbroken thread of God’s compassion continues in the New Testament through the ministry of His Son. Jesus is the “brightness of His glory and the express image of His person” (Hebrews 1:3), and throughout the Gospels, we consistently see Him demonstrating the heart of the Father. The Enemy’s purpose is to steal, kill, and destroy, but God’s purpose is to redeem, restore, and bring abundant life (see John 10:10). Jesus came to “destroy the works of the devil” (1 John 3:8).

The redemptive, healing work God initiated in the old covenant is continued and fulfilled in the new.

And in turn, we continue what Jesus began in the power of His Spirit. We are sent as He was sent (see John 20:21), equipped and commissioned to bring healing and reconciliation to the world.

Physical healing is an integral part of atonement and finds its fulfillment through the finished work of the cross.

Scripture reveals that all aspects of the person — spirit, soul, and body—were redeemed by Jesus’ sacrifice. All that the first Adam forfeited through disobedience the last Adam regained through perfect obedience.

Isaiah 53:4-6

One of the most common misunderstandings concerning healing is that we must do something to earn it. But how could we possibly repurchase what Christ has already fully paid for? Who would receive a beautiful gift and then go back to the store to pay for it again? Scripture is clear that Jesus Himself bore our sickness and disease on the cross in addition to paying the price for our spiritual redemption.

Even our emotional health was secured by Jesus’ sacrifice:

The chastisement for our peace was upon Him. — Isaiah 53:5

Jesus regained all that was lost by the fall and reversed the curse and consequences of separation from God (see Romans 5:17–19).

We could never add anything to what He has already accomplished. The message of the gospel is that Jesus’ work on our behalf is complete and finished, just as He declared on the cross.

He fulfilled every command of the Father and every prophecy of Scripture, and He made provision for our full redemption — including our healing.
